Post independence, the princely state didn’t join either India or Pakistan. When Pakistan attacked Kashmir, Raja Hari Singh who was the ruler decided to join India upon which he was asked to sign the Instrument of Accession.

By executing an Instrument of Accession under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh agreed to accede his state to the Dominion of India. On 27 October 1947, the then Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten accepted the accession. After that Kashmir legally became part of India.

Kashmir always had a healthy mix of all religions. It is only during the late twentieth century that regions with certain religious dominance started happening. By the time India attained independence, the resettlement on the basis of religions gathered further pace. The exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in different waves was the final nail in the coffin.

The solution to Kashmir issue is very simple. Pakistan has to give up the illegal occupation of Kashmir and allow the UN agreement to take place.

All the other conditions like demographic changes etc will fall in place.

The conflict started after the partition of India in 1947 when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession with India but still Pakistan claimed the entirety of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a dispute over the region that escalated into three wars between India and Pakistan and several other armed skirmishes.

UN brokered ceasefire did bring peace to the region but the defiance of Pakistan to accept the conditions of the agreement continue to flare the issue once in a while.
